Advancing the Practice: Deepening Clinical Excellence in Osteopathic Medicine
Stefan Hagopian, DO, FAAO & William M. Foley, DO, MSc
The American Academy of Osteopathy invites the osteopathic community to gather in 2026 for an in-depth exploration of what it truly means to practice at the highest level. Guided by the theme “Mastering Technique, Precision, and Perception,” this year’s Convocation is designed to highlight the philosophical foundations and advanced competencies that distinguish osteopathic medicine at its best.
At its core, osteopathy is an elegant balance of scientific understanding, skilled manual engagement, and deep respect for the body’s innate healing intelligence. Over generations, this approach has earned recognition as one of the safest and most effective forms of medical care. An achievement rooted in the commitment to treat the individual, not simply the diagnosis.
Redefining the Boundaries of Standard Care
Modern allopathic medicine provides a framework for healthcare delivery worldwide. Osteopathy builds upon this foundation while continuing to push beyond it. Our discipline is not content with managing pathology alone; it seeks to foster health, resilience, and functional harmony.
The 2026 AAO Convocation embodies this philosophy. An accomplished faculty of educators and clinicians, including numerous FCA and FAAO members, will present lectures and hands-on workshops designed to expand clinical reasoning, refine palpatory skill, and elevate therapeutic effectiveness.
Perception: Developing the Clinician’s Most Subtle Instrument
Perception evolves with intention and practice. It is cultivated through learning where to place attention, how to listen through the hands, and when to intervene with efficiency and clarity. As perceptual skill deepens, diagnostic confidence improves and treatment becomes more impactful.
This experiential understanding reflects the insights A.T. Still alluded to when he remarked, “I give you these things. They are not in a book, and they never have been.” Throughout Convocation, participants will examine how refined perception enhances clinical decision-making and transforms patient care.
Precision: Applied Anatomy in a Living System
Precision in osteopathic practice is not achieved through memorization alone. It develops through continuous exploration of how anatomical structures and physiological functions interact within a living, adaptive system. These relationships are dynamic, often subtle, and cannot be fully conveyed through static images or recorded instruction.
Faculty will guide attendees through layered applications of anatomy and physiology, emphasizing the interrelationships that form the basis of accurate diagnosis and effective osteopathic treatment.
Technique: Where Knowledge, Skill, and Principles Converge
Osteopathic technique cannot be reduced to rote procedure. Its effectiveness depends on thoughtful integration of multiple elements:
- Sound scientific understanding
- Skilled and perceptive use of the hands
- Real-time synthesis of osteopathic principles with structure and function
At the 2026 Convocation, participants will explore how technical mastery reflects the seamless union of intellect, touch, and philosophy allowing osteopathic care to reach its fullest expression.
New for 2026: Practice Development & Management Education
Clinical mastery flourishes best within practices that are sustainable, ethical, and professionally rewarding. Recognizing this, the AAO is introducing a new series of interactive sessions focused on practice building, management strategies, and long-term professional growth.
These workshops, led by experienced clinicians with successful practices, will provide actionable guidance for creating practice environments that support both personal fulfillment and financial stability. This Convocation is committed to ensuring the continued vitality of osteopathic medicine in service to humanity.
